Avatar Land's Budget News, Cars Land Clones Coming

This has been a very exciting week for the Walt Disney World Resort, as a total of three new attractions/areas have officially opened to the public (the New Fantasyland, Test Track - Presented by Chevrolet, and The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow). That said, it is now time to look toward the future of the resort. Two of the projects that have either been confirmed or are rumored to be coming to the Walt Disney World Resort were recently discussed in a brief interview with Tom Staggs (Chairman of the Walt Disney Parks & Resorts) made by an Orlando Sentinel's writer, which includes some very interesting information.

First of all, Tom Staggs confirms in the interview that Avatar Land's budget has not been cut (despite what many rumors were saying), and that the original budget has still remained the same:

"We've gotten more excited about Avatar as we've gone through development. Because we are finding that really playing around with this notion of allowing guests to visit Pandora can be very magical," Staggs said during a brief interview after a grand opening event for "New Fantasyland," which will remain under construction until 2014. "We're not in construction yet. We're still in development. And we're still honing exactly what we're going to do. But it's going to be big."

When Disney first announced the project in September 2011, company officials signaled they would spend between $400 million and $500 million. Asked if Disney still intends to invest the same amount in Avatar Land, Staggs responded, "Yes."

This is definitely a very good news, if true.

Now let's talk about a project that is rumored to be coming to Disney's Hollywood Studios in the near future: Cars Land. That very successful themed area just recently opened at Disney California Adventure, and rumor has it that a copy will soon be built here in Central Florida, which will replace two unpopular attractions: "Lights, Motors.... Actions - Extreme Stunt Show" and the infamous "Studio Backlot Tour." Regarding that land, take a look at Tom Staggs' comment in the interview:

Cars Land, a 12-acre area based on the 2006 Pixar film, has driven big gains in attendance and guest-spending across Disneyland Resort since opening in June. Staggs suggested Disney is likely to copy the concept in some of its other parks.

"Cars Land is a pretty darn good blueprint," Staggs said when asked if Disney is likely to build exact clones of the California version. "We'll always tinker…But at the same time there's not a lot wrong with Cars Land."
_________________________________________________________________________

That alone should confirm that Cars Land is indeed coming to Florida. It will certainly be announced during next year's D23 Expo, which will take place in Anaheim, California during the month of August.

One more thing. Tom Staggs also confirmed that more Star Wars experiences will be coming to the parks:
_________________________________________________________________________

The executive also confirmed that Disney will expand the presence of Star Wars in its theme parks now that it owns Lucasfilm. Disney, which previously licensed Star Wars rights, currently only uses it for a single ride and small surrounding area in theme parks in Orlando, Anaheim, Tokyo and Paris.

"You'll see more Star Wars in the parks," Staggs said, though he did not elaborate.

So, as you can see, it looks like the future of the Resort is slowly starting to shape up nicely. One thing is sure, though: it will be a long journey...

  1. Exciting news indeed. Although I do wish they kept Cars Land out of WDW, because it allows California Adventure to have a unique land to themselves. I hope they'll opt for a Star Wars land at Hollywood Studios. With all these projects in development, I wonder what's in store for 2021? (The resort's 50th anniversary)

  2. The idea of "Avatar-Land" makes me queasy. Cars-Land at the Studios sounds good though. As does an expanded Star Wars area.

  3. Please don't remind us of AVATAR land. Especially after we've had such a nice week of news...

  4. How does that at all confirm Cars Land? That's just a statement quoting its success... I'm not saying its addition to Florida is impossible or unrealistic, but you're reading into it too much.

Also, Lights, Motors, Action is unpopular? Perhaps amongst the fanboys who have seen it multiple times, but I'm pretty sure it still packs a large crowd and still maintains high popularity amongst the general public.

  5. Well, the Lights, Motors, Action show has very rarely more than two shows daily. It is very expensive to run it, but it looks like Walt Disney World understands that it is not popular enough to run a third show.

  6. I love to see Avatar Land. Not because I think it's a great movie, it isn't, not because I think it fits Disney, it doesn't. But because I'm wondering what they are going to do with the franchise. I for one am happy they are not going to tell the story of the movie in a 5 minute dark ride like they did with so many attractions (like mermaid). They can't. A smoking and swearing Sigourney can't be done. I'm also wondering what they are going to sell. I just can't think of any merchendising or food what they can sell except for a salad.

Cars land and more Star Wars for the Studios would be awesome. It feels a lot like they are transforming Magic Kingdom into a girls park and the Studios into a boys park. That's the only thing I don't like about all the new stuff Disney is doing. They should mix it up a bit.
Wishing that Cars Land should be exclusive for California is just not sensible. Copying attractions is cheaper and most guests aren't able to visit all Disney parks in the world.

  7. I will admit when Avatarland was announced I wasn't exactly the most excited but I am not going to judge Avatarland until I see more information about it and actually experience it. It could be fun

I am not a fan of the idea of cloning Carsland from California Adventure. I would rather Disney make something new for the Studios.

  8. I too hate the idea of bringing Cars Land to Orlando. I understand the argument that copying attractions is cheaper, but we're talking a huge immersive land that puts DCA as a top destination American park. Otherwise, the only rides exclusive to DCA as a result of the expansion are the Red Trolley Cars, Mickey's Fun Wheel and Silly Symphony Swings.

Exactly. Don't get me wrong, I love Cars Land and it would be great to have it here at WDW, BUT it would just effectively undermine what the expansion in California Adventure was trying to accomplish; making a unique park so people have a reason to come to it. Just look at Epcot and Animal Kingdom. Those are two unique parks with attractions that, in one way or another, have yet to be duplicated at any other Disney park. For example: there are many attractions at Disney parks that use Test Track's technology, but there's only ONE Test Track. That's what makes a place like WDW attractive to tourists/guests. It has some things that its cousin parks don't.

  10. Has anyone thought about where cars land is going to fit. I'm worried their going to get rid of some classic attractions like, the backlot, great movie ride, etc...I just hope they expand and don't get rid of anything....sigh

  11. There's no indication Cars Land is coming to Florida, he was very careful in what he said.

Cars Land gets all the credit, but Buena Vista Street has been just as important in the rebirth of California Adventure. Instead of just cloning Cars Land, I'd rather see the Studios park go under the knife like DCA to give it a sense of coherence. Build from the great foundation of Hollywood and Sunset Boulevards, and add bits and pieces to areas around the park.

They can add to/lengthen Pixar Place, or go to town with the purchase of Star Wars. As a bonus in the Lucasfilm deal they now also control Indiana Jones, so the possibilities are endless.

Oh, I'm also intrigued by Pandora at Animal Kingdom. How could anyone not be excited by what Imagineers could do with the amazing world from the movie?
