The Blue Sky Cellar reopens at DCA

The Blue Sky Cellar exhibit has reopened just yesterday at the Disneyland resort in California. It shows all of the projects that will be done at Disney's California Adventure.... and one that will be done at the Magic Kingdom too (The Little Mermaid). Here you are some more info about the Cellar:

Blue sky ideas turning into realities

This artist rendering served as the basis for the 86-foot long hand-painted mural that greets guests at the load area of The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel's Undersea Adventure.

On Jan. 27, the Walt Disney Imagineering Blue Sky Cellar debuted a new show showcasing the transformations already underway at Disney California Adventure Park. Imagineers have designed a refresh of the cellar that gives guests a chance to see the process behind the development of The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel's Undersea Adventure.
Walt Disney Imagineering Show Designer Alex G. served as the creative lead for this Blue Sky Cellar update, but he was also one of the early designers of The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel's Undersea Adventure. Among the sketches and concept artwork on display, a series of drawings by Alex showcases the process that Imagineers go through to achieve the final design of an attraction. In this case it took dozens of iterations over the course of a year to strike the right balance.

"When we were working on the expansion of Paradise Pier, we were tasked with creating a family-friendly, classic Disney-style attraction,” said Alex. "Those were the only requirements. We tossed around a lot of ideas, but the one we kept coming back to was a dark ride based on The Little Mermaid. It's hard to believe, but this two-decade old film that is so beloved has never before been realized as a ride-thru attraction. We're very excited that Ariel and friends will be making their debut here at Disney California Adventure."

Imagineer Alex reviews the plans for the Blue Sky Cellar update.
Other unique aspects of the exhibit include a full-size glass sample from the attraction entrance marquee that will allow guests to get up close for a tactile experience; a black light painted model of the Ursula scene in the attraction; and the new bird's-eye painting of the Park that comes to life with projected animation.

Some of the highlights of the updated showcase include:
  • Sketches and layout diagrams for the new attraction, along with three-dimensional models and other art work, all crafted by Imagineers.
  • A preview of Goofy's Sky School attraction and the new Paradise Pier dining locations that will open later this year.
  • All-new attraction posters for California Screamin', Mickey's Fun Wheel and Silly Symphony Swings - designed in the style of traditional Disney theme park attraction posters, which have appeared at the entrance to Disneyland Park for more than 50 years.
  • Concept art for the new park entrance, the Buena Vista Street entry plaza, and the Red Car Trolleys, which will transport guests from the park entrance through Hollywood Land to the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.
