Behind the Scenes: Rocking at the Rock 'n' Glow

They really know how to rock and roll for the young and old at the Rock ‘n’ Glow Dance Party under the Sorcerer’s Hat.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from the outdoor concert at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, but it’s a fun show with thumping music, dancing lights and just enough pyrotechnics to keep you on your toes.

Stage Manager Matt Larsen helps keep the outdoor show rocking under clear or rainy skies.

Moreover, it’s nice to see the crowd seeming to gather spontaneously, as the stage lights go up and the mist machines pump out a glowing haze, while a DJ invites guests to gather round.

Before long, characters such as Goofy and Chip – or maybe it was Dale – show up and mingle in the crowd, dancing with kids and parents to get the party started.
While youngsters can have fun with the costumed characters at the start of the show, teens and parents can enjoy the pulsing light show and neatly timed pyrotechnics that accompany the high-octane music spanning several decades of rock ‘n’ roll.

Crowds enjoy the show.

The show features [musics from many artists, and are] all performed by Mulch, Sweat & Shears. Running through Aug. 14, Rock ‘n’ Glow – three shows a night, five nights a week – is part of Summer Nightastic!

There’s fun storyline behind the band – Mulch, Sweat & Shears. Singer Morris Mulch tells the crowd that the band members are part of the landscaping crew who just showed up and pleaded for a chance to perform.

And when they put down their rakes and pick up their guitars, it’s clear that they really know how to strut their stuff. I don’t know how good Mulch is with a shovel and shears, but he’s a skilled entertainer who engages the audience. The show never flags.
The group cranks out a thundering sound that gets guests hopping up and down, waving their arms and applauding.

Rock ‘n’ Glows mixes music, lights and pyrotechnics.

Overseeing the show and the three control booths housed in rain-proof tents is veteran Stage Manager Matt Larsen. Larsen has spent all of his 14 years at the Walt Disney World Resort in entertainment and says that having been a performer helps him in his job.

“I know what I expect to see and what I need to deliver to the audience.”

Larsen’s team operates about 115 lights, 30 speakers, 10 bubble machines and a host of pyrotechnics that include comets, mortars, spinners and wigglers. And what rock show would be complete without a guitar that sprays out a shower of sparks.

When the band takes a break, a Disney DJ keeps the party lively with a fun selection of music that can keep up to 1,000 guests partying by the stage.

So whether you just tap your toes or want to let it all go, there’s something for everybody at the Rock ‘n’ Glow.
