Tropical Storm Ian Likely to Become a Hurricane and Impact Florida Next Week

Guests planning on visiting Florida and other nearby states in the coming days should be aware that a major storm is heading towards those areas. Here's the latest update from the National Hurricane Center:

Tropical Depression #9 has intensified into Tropical Storm Ian since earlier this evening. At 11:00 p.m. EDT the center of Tropical Storm Ian was located 385 miles SE of Kingston, Jamaica. Ian is moving toward the west-northwest near 12 mph which is a reduction in speed from the 5 p.m. update. A westward or west-northwestward motion is expected through early Sunday. On Monday, Ian is forecast to move near or over western Cuba as a strengthening hurricane and then approach the Florida peninsula at or near major hurricane strength, with the potential for significant impacts from storm surge, hurricane-force winds, and heavy rainfall.  While it is too soon to determine the exact magnitude and location of these impacts, residents in Cuba, the Florida Keys, and the Florida peninsula should ensure they have their hurricane plan in place and closely monitor forecast updates through the weekend.

State and County partners will be meeting with the National Weather Service at 11:45 a.m. today. The Walt Disney World Emergency Operations Center will send an update following the briefing.
