This Week in Disney History: September 10-16

Published every week, this interesting series features highlights from all the divisions of The Walt Disney Company. Let's see what happened this week:


This week:
On Sept. 12, 1992, the Disney animated television series “The Little Mermaid” debuted. The series is a prequel based on the 1989 Disney animated feature film of the same name. It is the first-ever television series created specifically for one of Disney’s most-beloved animated heroines. It originally appeared on CBS, running from 1992 to 1995. Disney Channel reran the series in the late-1990s.  Some of the voice actors of the film reprise their roles in the series, among them Jodi Benson as Ariel, Samuel E. Wright as Sebastian, Kenneth Mars as King Triton, and Pat Carroll as Ursula.

Sept. 10
1932 -“King Neptune” (Silly Symphony) debuts
1988 – The television series “The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh” debuts on ABC
1990 – The television series “TaleSpin” debuts in syndication
1993 – The television series “Bill Nye, The Science Guy” debuts in syndication
2007 – The Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique opens at Walt Disney World Resort in Magic Kingdom Park
2009 – The first ever D23 Expo begins at the Anaheim Convention Center in California

Sept. 11
1968 – The United States Postal Service issues a six-cent U.S. postage stamp featuring Walt Disney’s portrait
2009 – A Buzz Lightyear action figure completes his journey with the crew of the space shuttle Discovery, landing safely at Edwards Air Force Base in California

Sept. 12
1992 – The animated television series “Disney’s The Little Mermaid” debuts
2005 – Hong Kong Disneyland Park opens
2009 – A reboot of the Star Tours attraction is announced at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, Calif.
2013 – Princess Fairytale Hall opened at Walt Disney World in Magic Kingdom

Sept. 13
1987 – The television game show “College Bowl ‘87” aired
1997 – The animated series “Pepper Ann” debuts
1997 – The second season of “Muppets Tonight” premieres on Disney Channel
1988 – The television special Roger Rabbit & the Secrets of Toon Town aired
2005 – Direct-to-video animated film “Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween Movie” was released
2009 – The first D23 Expo concludes in Anaheim, Calif.

Sept. 14
1964 – President Lyndon B. Johnson presents Walt Disney with the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House
1969 – The television series “The Wonderful World of Disney” debuts
1985 – The television series “The Golden Girls” debuts
2001 – The Disney Channel original movie “The Poof Point” debuts
2002 – The ABC-TV network’s Saturday morning programming block of shows for kids “ABC Kids” began

Sept. 15
1944 – The Goofy cartoon short “How to Play Football” debuts
2004 – Mary Poppins stage musical produced by Disney and Cameron Macintosh, opened for previews in England
2013 – The television series “Liv and Maddie” aired on the Disney Channel

Sept. 16
1933 – The Silly Symphony short “The Pied Piper” debuts
1984 – Restaurant el Marrakesh opens in the Morocco pavilion at Epcot
2008 – Disney announces Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort at Walt Disney World Resort
