This Week in Disney History: May 7-13

This Week: Seeking an overdose of cuteness? Disney Tsum Tsum Kingdom (Tsum means “to stack” in Japanese) debuted May 12, 2016, on Disney.com in live-action shorts. The small plush toys featuring the faces of popular Disney characters, trek through the adventures of everyday life, including a cupcake battle and  fishing excursion. 

May 7
2011 – Disneyland Park hosts the world premiere of “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”
2011 – The final Walt Disney World Grad Nite event is held in Magic Kingdom Park

May 8
1998 – Lagoona Gator, a new Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon character, is introduced to the water park at Walt Disney World Resort
2000 – The Millennium Dreamers Celebration, featuring 2,000 children from more than 90 countries, begins at Walt Disney World Resort

May 9
1941 – “A Good Time for a Dime” (Donald Duck cartoon short) debuts
1947 – “Sleepy Time Donald” (Donald Duck cartoon short) debuts
1953 – “For Whom the Bulls Toil” (Goofy cartoon short) debuts
2012 – ABC’s “Modern Family” debuts the episode “Disneyland”
2015 – Disney’s “Tomorrowland” movie premieres at Downtown Disney at Disneyland Park

May 10
1946 – “In Dutch” (Pluto cartoon short) debuts
2005 – Ceremony held at Disneyland Park honoring animator and Disney Legend Ollie Johnston during the 50th anniversary of the park
2006 – The musical “Tarzan” opens in New York City at the Richard Rogers Theatre
2012 – Disney Legend Alice Davis has a window unveiled on Main Street, U.S.A. in Disneyland Park

May 11
1935 – The Silly Symphony short “Water Babies” debuts

May 12
1995 – Hollywood Pictures “Crimson Tide” film is released
2007 – “My Friends Tigger and Pooh” television series debuts on Disney Channel
2016 – “Tsum Tsum Kingdom” video series debuts on Disney.com
2017 –“Happily Ever After” nighttime fireworks spectacular debuts at Magic Kingdom Park

May 13
1933 – “The Mail Pilot” (Mickey Mouse cartoon short) debuts
1992 – “Fantasmic!” debuts on the Rivers of America at Disneyland Park
1994 – Touchstone film “When a Man Loves a Woman” is released
1997 – The Magic Kingdom II ferryboat at the Walt Disney World Resort is renamed the Richard F. Irvine
2009 – Disney-Pixar’s “Up” debuts at the Cannes Film Festival
