This Week in Disney History: May 21-27

This week: On May 23, 2010, the final episode of “Lost” aired on ABC. Over six seasons, millions of viewers were captivated by the one-hour drama series about the survivors of Oceanic Airlines Flight 815 stranded on a mysterious Pacific island after a plane crash. Amid time travel, flashbacks and flash forwards, we saw them scavenge what they could to survive their environs and against “the Others,” who also inhabited the island – or dare trying to escape to return home. The show won several awards, including an Emmy® for Outstanding Drama Series in 2005 and the Golden Globe® for Best TV Drama in 2006.

1948 – The animated short “Donald’s Dream Voice” debuts
1954 – “Pigs Is Pigs” special cartoon is released

May 22 
1942 – “The Army Mascot” (Pluto cartoon) is released
1987 – Touchstone releases “Ernest Goes to Camp”
1992 – Hollywood Pictures releases “Encino Man”
1998 – Rocket Rods, “Honey, I Shrunk the Audience,” Astro Orbiter and Redd Rockett’s Pizza Port open as part of a renovated Tomorrowland at Disneyland Park
2009 – “The Boys: The Sherman Brothers’ Story” documentary about the careers of the song-writing team, Richard and Robert Sherman, has a limited release in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and Palm Desert, Calif.
2015 – Walt Disney Pictures releases “Tomorrowland”

May 23 
1922 – Walt Disney incorporates Laugh-O-Gram Films, his first cartoon company in Kansas City
1931 – The China Plate (Silly Symphony cartoon) is released
1997 – Light Magic debuts at Disneyland Park
2001 – The Magic Carpets of Aladdin opens at Magic Kingdom Park
2010 – Last episode of the television series “Lost” airs on ABC
2014 – Rock Your Disney Side party keeps Disneyland Park, Magic Kingdom Park and Disney California Adventure Park open a full 24 hours, starting at 6 a.m. to 6 a.m. the following day
2015 – Harambe Market area at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park opens

May 24
1989 – Ray Disney, Walt’s older brother, dies at age 98
1996 – Hollywood Pictures releases “Spy Hard”
2013 – Monstrous Summer “All-Nighter” keeps Disneyland Park, Magic Kingdom Park and Disney California Adventure Park open a full 24 hours, starting at 6 a.m. to 6 a.m. the following day

May 25
1935 – “The Cookie Carnival” (Silly Symphony cartoon) is released
1983 – Pinocchio’s Daring Journey opens at Disneyland Park
1983 – Village Haus Restaurant in Fantasyland at Disneyland Park opens; renamed the Red Rose Taverne in 2017
2001– Touchstone Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films release “Pearl Harbor”
2007 – Walt Disney Pictures releases “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End”
2011 – Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar and Tangaroa Terrace open at the Disneyland Hotel
2013 – “Mickey and the Magical Map” premieres at Disneyland Park

May 26
1990 – Mickey’s Starland (now Mickey’s Toontown Fair) opens at Magic Kingdom Park
1995 –  Touchstone Pictures releases “Mad Love”
2000 – Touchstone Pictures/Spyglass Entertainment release “Shanghai Noon”
2006 – Disney•Pixar’s “Cars” premieres at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte, N.C.

May 27
1933 – “Three Little Pigs” (Silly Symphony short) debuts
1948 – Walt Disney Productions releases “Melody Time”
1985 – Epcot hosts the 2nd Inaugural Celebration for President Ronald Reagan
1992 – Sequoia Lodge hotel opens at Disneyland Paris
1995 – Casey’s Corner opens at Magic Kingdom Park
2011 – Mickey’s Soundsational Parade debuts at Disneyland Park
2016 – Walt Disney Pictures releases “Alice Through the Looking Glass”
2016 – Tiffins restaurant and Nomad Lounge open in Discovery Island at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park
2016 – “Frozen­ – Live at the Hyperion” stage production opens at the Hyperion Theater in Disney California Adventure Park
2017– Pandora – The World of Avatar open at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park with two attractions – Na’vi River Journey and Avatar Flight of Passage – dining at Satu’li Canteen, beverages at Pongu Pongu and shopping at Windtraders
2017 – Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! attraction opens at Disney California Adventure Park
