This Week in Disney History: April 23-29

Published every week, this interesting series features highlights from all the divisions of The Walt Disney Company. Let's see what happened this week:


This Week: The first Radio Disney Music Awards show for kids and families was held April 27, 2013, at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. Featuring such young artists as Selena Gomez, Bridgit Mendler and Coco Jones, the show allows viewers to determine the winners through multiple weeks of submitting votes via text message, Radio Disney’s social media profiles and RadioDisney.com. The winners receive a special award named Ardy, which was designed by Disney Design Group artist Lin Shih and incorporates a blank, 9-inch Vinylmation figure in the design.

April 23 
1943 – “Fall Out – Fall In” (Donald Duck cartoon) debuts
1986 – Leaders host the groundbreaking ceremony for Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa
1993 – Touchstone film “Indian Summer” is released

April 24 
1989 – An updated version of “Mickey Mouse Club,” taped at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, debuts on Disney Channel
1992 – Hollywood Pictures releases “Passed Away” film
2009 – Imagineer and Disney Legend Marty Sklar announces his retirement, effective July 17

April 25
1930 – “Wild Waves” (Mickey Mouse animated short) debuts
1952 – “Let’s Stick Together” (Donald Duck animated short) debuts
1997 – Touchstone Pictures releases “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion”

April 26
1940 – The animated short “Tugboat Mickey” debuts
1991 – “Dinosaurs,” a television series from Disney and Jim Henson Associates, debuts on ABC
2008 – “Walt & El Grupo,” premieres at the San Francisco International Film Festival, chronicling Walt Disney’s 1941 trip to South America

April 27
1951 – The Goofy cartoon short “Cold War” debuts
1956 – “Hooked Bear” a special cartoon, is released
1990 – Touchstone film “Spaced Invaders” is released
2007 – “The Invisible” film is released
2013 – First Radio Disney Music Awards ceremony held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.
2015 – Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto, with an adjacent Trader Sam’s Tiki Terrace, opens off the lobby at the Polynesian Resort at the Walt Disney World Resort

April 28
1930 – “Night” (Silly Symphony cartoon) directed by Walt Disney is released
1939 – “Hockey Champ” (Donald Duck cartoon) is released
1950 – “Trailer Horn” (Donald Duck cartoon) is released
1997 – Cinderella’s Royal Table becomes the new name of King Stefan’s Banquet Hall in Cinderella Castle in Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort
2008 – Abu’s Bazaar shop opens in the Arabian Coast area at Tokyo DisneySea
2011 – Tokyo DisneySea reopens after several weeks of being closed after a March 12 earthquake and tsunami in Japan

April 29
1949 – “Pluto’s Sweater” (Pluto cartoon) is released
1957 – The interior of Sleeping Beauty Castle is opened as a walk-through attraction
1994 – The moderate-priced All-Star Resorts Surf’s Up unit opens at the Walt Disney World Resort
1995 – “Escape to Witch Mountain” television movie airs on ABC
1997 – Disney Legend Hugh Attwooll dies in Harlow, Essex, England
2011 – “Prom” movie is released
