New Guardians of the Galaxy Ride Coming to Disneyland

The Guardians of the Galaxy are coming to the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim. Beginning summer 2017, guests at Disney California Adventure Park will join in a daring confrontation with the Collector. He has opened his unique collection of fauna, relics and species to guests for a special tour culminating with his latest prized possessions: the Guardians of the Galaxy, themselves! Rocket has a plan to free his friends, which includes recruiting Disneyland Resort guests.

This comically cosmic, rocking new adventure, Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! is the result of a collaboration between the creative minds behind the comic books, the films and Walt Disney Imagineering. The attraction will drop guests directly into the story alongside characters from the comic books and the blockbuster films.

Joe Rohde, Portfolio Creative Director, Walt Disney Imagineering, is leading the project. He shared this preview of the new attraction: “The setting is a kind of fortress that’s owned by the mysterious Collector and it’s packed with creatures and his latest acquisitions from across the universe. Now he has imprisoned the Guardians of the Galaxy and they’re hanging in display cases over a giant abyss. The captor doesn’t know it but Rocket Raccoon has escaped and is enlisting our aid—all the guests—to help the Guardians in a breakout scheme. And the rest is comical chaos; a very funny, very irreverent story and a really wonderful addition to Disney California Adventure.”

“It’s such a thrill to be working alongside a true visionary like Joe Rohde and the entire Walt Disney Imagineering team,” said Joe Quesada, Chief Creative Officer, Marvel. “Like our stories and characters, projects led by Joe are the stuff of legend, so Marvel fans rejoice! The universe couldn’t be in better hands! Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! is going to be an out of this world experience and what has me even more excited are Joe’s ‘secret’ plans for the future. We’re just getting warmed up.”

The announcement was made yesterday at San Diego Comic-Con by Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, who said: “The incredibly talented Disney Imagineering team has found a way to harness the spirit which drove Guardians of the Galaxy’s success to create this immersive experience. With its debut timed to the release of the film’s sequel, we are eager to present the attraction to the millions who visit Disney California Adventure and place them in the center of the action as they join in a mission alongside our audacious Guardians of the Galaxy team.”

Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! takes place in the fortress-like museum of the mysterious Collector, who has trapped his newest acquisitions, the Guardians of the Galaxy. One member of the group, the intrepid Rocket, has escaped, and he calls upon brave visitors for help. Guests board a gantry lift which launches them into a daring adventure as they join Rocket in an attempt to set free his fellow Guardians.

The new attraction will anchor a broader universe of Super Heroes that will grow over time in Disney California Adventure Park. Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! will transform the structure currently housing The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror™ into an epic new adventure, enhancing the breathtaking free fall sensation with new visual and audio effects to create a variety of ride experiences. Guests will experience multiple, random and unique ride profiles in which the rise and fall of the gantry lift rocks to the beat of music inspired by the film’s popular soundtrack.

Fans of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror will want to experience the attraction from now until its final “drop day,” which will be celebrated in true Disney fashion in early January.

  1. Disney should retheme the Florida Tower of Terror to Ducktales and you could drop into Mc Ducks money pit as the classic song plays. Plus having to pay extra for the drop package, running at half capacity and opening early for the rich elite would be part of theming as Scrooge is always trying to make a quick buck. $99 extra if you want to wait in the indoor AC line and get a cupcake after riding. After all the money you spent you would not even notice that's it a cheaply done redo of a classic ride.

  2. This says Tower is closing in January. Feige says "With its debut timed to the release of the film’s sequel..." GOTG2 comes out May 5th. That's 4 months. I am betting this is a temporary overlay like Haunted Mansion Holiday. If rumors are true, the Twilight Zone license was due to expire soon. If Disney needed to remove the Twilight Zone theming anyway, why not slap this on for a few months/years until "by popular demand" they bring back the Hollywood Tower Hotel as a generic Hollywood spooky hotel? Here's hoping... Cuz if not, what a waste of the Marvel license. First an Iron Man overlay of Star Tours in HK and now this.

  3. It's sad that Universal's update of the Hulk looks more interesting, exciting and truer to the characters then this. Long live Marvel Super Hero Island! Stop the cash grabs!

I wonder if the Tower of Terror will look like an inflatable pink birthday cake, replace its glowing Hollywood letters with Guardians 2017 or put a giant Star Lord hat/helmet with a gift shop under it. Temporary and Disney usually ends up being years or decades.

  4. This...is just weird. It has the distinct smell of, "Hey we own this IP, let's do a quick overlay of an attraction to cash in."

It clashes with the themimg of Hollywood Land. It was a visual treat to walk down the street and have TOT at the end awaiting you, in a grand and menacing fashion. Now it'll look out of place with all those satellite dishes and antennas. Looks more like a cellphone/wifi tower that's taken over a once beautiful building. Ugh... I can go on and on. It's another attraction that no one wanted and leaves people saying, "But why this?"

At least the superior version is still left untouched at DHS.

  5. It is not a temporary overlay. This is the start of the Marvel Land for DCA. If the story is similar to that of the Tokyo DisneySea Tower, it will be great. I've been to every Tower and out of the four, the DCA version and the WDSP version are the weakest. I think this will provide a much better experience.

  6. So yea this is not temporary, it is a drop coaster so no track redo and you don't need to do a lot of rework to the drop shaft. The exterior work can start immediately if they wanted and the down will be mostly for queue redesign. This tower is also getting the upgraded computer system to give it the random drop profiles. To those complaing how it ruins the 1930s Hollywood theme, that theme is loose begin with. This is the start of a Marvel themed area as Joe Rhode mentions in the video. If you loved the ride, it is still there, just now it will have an improved ride system with a more cohesive story from the moment you walk up to the building.

  7. If they touch Tower of Terror at WDW, I'm done. Seriously.

And no point comparing to Tokyo Disney. That's not a Disney property. It's just licensed.

  8. I know it's Disney but what has it to do with Orlando?

  9. It has to do with Orlando because WDW also has a Tower of Terror, and the consensus seems to be that we do NOT want it re-themed.

  10. When this rumor first surfaced there we indications that they were pushing for this to be done on both the DCA and DHS towers, but it now sounding like the DHS tower is safe and Guardians will be replacing Universe of Energy in Epcot.

  11. Thanks Dan. While I have no issue replacing Universe of Energy, I'm disappointed that World Showcase will become the latest location for more movie rides. Whatever happened to creating a unique new experience for attractions? When Epcot first opened, everything was original. Nothing was based on movies or anything else. It was all unique. Guess those days are gone...Bummer.
