This Week in Disney History: Feb. 28 - March 6

March 3, 1995- Indiana Jones Adventure attraction opens in Disneyland
Why does it have to have snakes? Because it's the Indiana Jones Adventure! When this exciting attraction opened in 1995, the world was watching. After 11 years and $100 million invested in creating the ride, Guests and media alike were anxious to embark on this thrilling adventure through India's Lost Delta. More than 1,000 members of the press from across the globe attended the big unveiling, along with thousands of Guests who waited four hours to ride. To help pass the time, travelers were given a decoding paper to translate the “Maraglyphics” and pictographs scattered on the walls throughout the “ruins” of the queue. When they finally stepped foot into the 12-person jeep to begin the epic journey, they thought they were ready for the adventure ahead. But with "falling" debris, fire balls, flying mummies, deadly spears, a giant runaway boulder, and of course, a larger-than-life cobra or two, they had no idea what was in store! The ride was very well received and continues to be a major attraction at Disneyland today.

Feb. 28, 2004 – The Earl of Sandwich Shop opens in Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World.
In 1762, John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, was a very busy man. As the First Sea Lord of the mighty British Navy during the American Revolution, he was known as a great explorer and administrator. However, history remembers him more for the namesake he left behind. As legend has it, Lord Montagu was too busy to eat, which is why he came up with the brilliant idea to put meat between two slices of bread. This way he could eat on the run without utensils. And so began the story of the lunchtime favorite: the sandwich. Now 250 years later, Lord Montagu's ancestors have perfected this tasty delicacy, and you can taste the results for yourself at Earl of Sandwich in Downtown Disney. This popular sandwich shop opened Feb. 28, 2004, at Walt Disney World and has been a must-stop shop ever since. With tasty hot sandwiches, nutritious salads, delectable wraps and scrumptious desserts, there is something for everyone's taste buds. And don't miss out on the world-renowned Holiday Turkey sandwich, available year-round and complete with turkey, stuffing, gravy and cranberries. Consider it a history lesson!
