This Week in Disney History: February 14 - 20

Feb. 14, 1998 — Ghiradelli Soda Fountain & Chocolate Shop opens at Downtown Disney in Walt Disney World
While strolling through the streets of Downtown Disney, one cannot help but be drawn toward the heavenly scent of freshly baked waffle cones and decadent chocolate wafting through the air. The Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop opened Valentine's Day 1998 in The Disney Village Marketplace. This delectable dream-come-true was originally founded in San Francisco in 1852, and has long been a favorite destination of visitors to the area. Reflecting an old-fashioned soda shop, this 4,000 square-foot chocolate lover's paradise offers sweet treats from wall to wall. From decadent sundaes and hand-dipped chocolate waffle cones to divine milkshakes and floats, this is a must –stop shop for anyone with a sweet tooth.

Feb. 17, 2004 — Disney announces the purchase of The Muppets from The Jim Henson Company
Disney added a few exciting new members to its colorful character family in 2004 when it purchased "The Muppets" and "Bear in the Big Blue House" properties from The Jim Henson Company. The deal included the rights to such beloved characters as Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, and Animal characters, as well as the copyrights and trademarks for both shows. The deal was a long time coming, as months before his death, Jim Henson pursued extensive discussions with The Walt Disney Company because he believed Disney would be the perfect home for his furry friends. It was not until many years later that this dream was made into a reality. This addition to the Disney family can now be seen in action in the Muppet*Vision 3D attraction at Disney's Hollywood Studios.
