This Week in Disney History: January 10 - 16

Jan. 15, 1999 - Disney’s All-star Movies Resort opens at the Walt Disney World Resort
Families first checked into Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort Jan. 15, 1999. This value resort was the third in the All-Star Resorts family with 1,920 rooms. Dogs, a car and more are the stars of its 10 buildings with themes from five classic Disney films: “Fantasia,” “101 Dalmatians,” “The Love Bug,” “The Mighty Ducks,” and “Toy Story.” Guests staying here may find themselves eclipsed by a 47-foot-tall Buzz Lightyear, 35 foot-tall ballerina and 2,000-pound hockey sticks and more. But they can relax reel-time with two swimming pools; a 1,500-square-foot playground; food court; merchandise location; and arcade.

Jan. 13, 1930 - The first Mickey Mouse comic strip appears
After appearing in 15 successful animated shorts, Mickey made his debut in the first ever Mickey Mouse comic strip series in 1930.  The first comic features Mickey Mouse and the great aviator Col Lindbergh, who appears in one of Mickey’s daydreams while he relaxes on a comfy straw bale.   The original strip was credited to Walt Disney, the art to Ub Iwerks and the inking to Win Smith.  Disney eventually brought Floyd Gottfredson on the team after both Iwerks and Smith resigned their positions. The complimentary combination of comedy and adventure found in the artwork brought Mickey to various comic books and comic strips throughout the 20th and 21st century. In addition to Gottfredson, other artists that left their mark on the strip over the years included Roman Arambula, Rock Hoover, Jim Engel, Bill Wright and others.
