This Week in Disney History: October 4 - 10

October 8, 2003 - Mickey’s PhilharMagic officially opens at Magic Kingdom Park

Mickey’s PhilharMagic originally debuted at the Magic Kingdom Park on October 8, 2003 and has since opened at both Hong Kong Disneyland and Tokyo Disneyland. Taking place in the luxurious Fantasyland Concert Hall located near Cinderella’s Castle inside Magic Kingdom Park, the attraction follows Mickey and a few of his pals, as they journey through scenes from several classic Disney films. This 12-minute story unfolds on a 150 foot-wide-wrap-around-screen, the largest ever created for a 3D attraction.  An assortment of in-house special effects, scents and water, fully immerses audiences right into the richly animated worlds of many classic Disney films. Donald takes you on a whirlwind tour of some of the most memorable songs in Disney animation history including “Be our Guest” from Beauty and the Beast, “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid and many others.

1989 - The Contemporary Cafe' opens at Disney’s Contemporary Resort

1993 - The Disney-owned Mighty Ducks of Anaheim play their first NHL game at the Anaheim Pond (now Honda Center)

2010 - Walt Disney Pictures releases “Secretariat”

2010 - The nighttime street party ElecTRONica debuts at Disney California Adventure Park

2003 - The Walt Disney Company Chairman and CEO Michael Eisner, along with NASA and HP leaders and two astronauts onboard the International Space Station, officially dedicate Mission: SPACE at Epcot

2003 - “Wishes,” the new fireworks show, officially opens to Guests at Magic Kingdom Park

Oct. 10

1929 - “The Barnyard Battle” (Mickey Mouse cartoon short) debuts

1931 - “The Barnyard Broadcast” (Mickey Mouse cartoon short”

1952 - “Trick or Treat” (Donald Duck cartoon short) debuts

1957 - The first episode of “Zorro” premieres on ABC
