Old Town Expands and... Becomes a Theme Park?

That's quite a headline, right? Before we even start discussing this matter, be aware that in this case the word "theme park" may assume a different meaning, or at least that's what I understand from Old Town's new logos and marquees (like the logo you can see at the top of this post). But the expansion is going to be obviously linked to this new 'theme park' concept. Let's take a look together at the condition of Old Town as of now, and let's see what should be coming in the near future.

First of all, their signature Wave Swinger ride has been sold, as we reported in this update. Take a look:

It looks a pretty sad area:

Of course, now we know that something is coming soon, probably in this same area:

A close-up of the top of the Wave Swinger:

The previous pictures were taken a week ago, while the following were taken just a couple of days ago, and the situation is pretty much exactly the same:

In this area we may soon see a zip-line, a climbing rock wall and a ropes course!:

A new, small stage has been put in one of the to main "hubs" of Old Town:

The thing that struck me was seeing this new logo, which said that Old Town was now a theme park:

The location that was going to become the new home of the "Full Speed Arcade & Mini-Golf" is now a place where you can make your own music video (just putting your own face in a previously-made video):

Completely different from what we were expecting some months ago. Here's how the area looked some weeks ago:

Old Town has also opened a new tour stop called the "Old Town Segway Adventures," where you can rent a Segway for how long you want:

The Half-Day rental rate looks good, but I would not recommend paying $5 for a Demo Ride, as you can do that for free at Epcot (of course, this is for those who actually visit Walt Disney World during their vacation!):

This is one of the two ride sections that should make Old Town a theme park. This is, of course, highly debatable, because saying that they're now a theme park, they're actually misrepresenting, or "overestimating" their product.
As we said many times, "a theme park recreates an atmosphere of another place and time," and we can rightly say that Old Town does recreate the atmosphere of an old city, so on this point, we can say that the park can be qualified; but theme parks also offer very high-quality, themed attractions, including indoor and outdoor rides, very well-kept gardens and flower creations, as well as daily shows and entertainment.
We can say that Old Town doesn't really offer any of these things, including "quality attractions". Their attractions are fine, their prices do not empty your pockets, and you can spend some quality time with your family and friends, but they're not at the same level of a theme park ride. They're not supposed to. By saying this, we do not intend to bash Old Town's reputation. We're just discussing how they had the idea of assuming that they can be considered a theme park. For now, they are an amusement park, not theme park...
If in the future they will do enormous steps forward on this matter, by adding great attractions and refurbishing all the stores and the area, then we will be talking about this again.

A new logo has appeared on the park's Wacky Worm family coaster:

Here's the proof that something is coming soon:

It says that many things are coming this summer!:

COMING SOON:

A Ropes Course:

A Zip-Line (it has to be the fourth or fifth new zip-line coming to Central Florida this year!!):

...and a Rock Wall:

On a related news, OLD TOWN's website has been completely renovated. A sign of better things to come?

We hope you've enjoyed this update! To conclude we want to say that Old Town has an extremely high potential, and we hope they will make some really needed changes to their park, to make it look as great as it was during its glorious, old days! Share your comments, especially if you've visited the park many times!

  1. I was just over at Fun Spot yesterday, and Old Town looked so sad and depressing...nothing like what it was 10yrs ago when I moved here. Here is hoping it works out

  4. It seems like every time I am in Orlando I seem to visit Old Town. I have been going there for a while now. It holds a special place in my heart. Now with saying that, I would have to agree I am confused with them saying they are a theme park. I hope the best for them. I would love more people to have more great memories of that place like I do!
