Today, we are posting a new update on the history of Walt Disney World's theme parks.
This week, we'll focus on Disney's Hollywood Studios:

"100 Years of Magic"
On October 1, 2001 The WALT DISNEY WORLD®Resort begins the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the birth of its visionary founder, Walt Disney (born on December 5, 1901). The focus of the 17-month-long "100 Years of Magic" Celebration at the WALT DISNEY WORLD®Resort is centered at the Disney-MGM Studios.
The following parades and attractions also opened in honor of the celebration:
- 122-foot-tall Sorcerer Mickey Hat Icon, which serves as the centerpiece of the celebration, is located on Hollywood Boulevard in front of the Great Movie Ride at the Disney-MGM Studios.
- "Playhouse Disney-Live On Stage!" opens at the Disney-MGM Studios. This new stage show features Bear in the Big Blue House™-Live on Stage!, as well as characters from "Rolie Polie Olie," "Stanley," and other Playhouse Disney favorites.
- "Walt Disney: One Man's Dream" which takes Guests on a journey through the life of Walt Disney opens at the Disney-MGM Studios.
- "Disney Stars and Motor Cars" parade opens at the Disney-MGM Studios (Unofficially opens to Guests on September 24, 2001)

"Beauty and the Beast" - Live on Stage 
"Beauty and the Beast" - Live on Stage debuts at the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD®Resort on November 22, 1991. (The Beauty and the Beast film also had its general release on November 22, 1991. This was the first time the debut of a stage show coincided with the opening of the movie that inspired it.) 

"Beauty and the Beast" - Live on Stage - Reopens
On June 12, 1994, "Beauty and the Beast" - Live on Stage reopens at the new Theater of the Stars on Sunset Boulevard in the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort.

"Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame, A Musical Adventure" - Opens
On June 21, 1996, "Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame -- A Musical Adventure" stage show premieres at the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD®Resort.
"Fantasmic!" Moat Water Volume The moat surrounding the show contains approximately 1.9 million gallons of water.


"Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" Movie Set Adventure - Opens
On December 17, 1990, the "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" Movie Set Adventure opens in the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD®Resort.

"Sorcery in the Sky" Fireworks - Premiere  
On May 29, 1990, "Sorcery in the Sky" fireworks show premieres at the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort. 

"The Spirit of Pocahontas" - Opens
On June 23, 1995, "The Spirit of Pocahontas" stage show premieres at the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD®Resort.
The last performance of "The Spirit of Pocahontas" stage show takes place on February 24, 1996.

"Voyage of The Little Mermaid" - Opens
On January 7, 1992, "Voyage of The Little Mermaid" opens at the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD®Resort.

"ABC Sound Studio: One Saturday Morning" - Opens
On July 1, 1997, ABC Sound Studio: One Saturday Morning opens in the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD®Resort and closes on February 21, 1999 to be replaced by SOUNDS DANGEROUS Starring Drew Carey on April 22, 1999. (formerly known as the Monster Sound Show which opened with the Disney-MGM Studios on May 1, 1989).

Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS) Hall of Fame - Induction Ceremony
On October 1, 1994, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS) Hall of Fame induction ceremony takes place at the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort.

Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS) Hall of Fame Plaza - Dedication
On November 20, 1993, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS) Hall of Fame Plaza dedication ceremony takes place at the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort.

Aladdin's Royal Caravan - Opens
On December 21, 1992, Aladdin's Royal Caravan parade premieres in the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD®Resort.
The parade ends on August 27, 1995.

American Film Institute - Opens
In February, 1996, the American Film Institute opens at the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD®Resort. The American Film Institute Showcase is officially dedicated on October 5, 1996.

Bear in the Big Blue House - Live On Stage! - Debuts
On June 7, 1999, The Bear in the Big Blue HouseTM-Live On Stage! debuts in Soundstage 5 (Restaurant) at the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD®Resort.
The  'Bear in the Big Blue House-Live on Stage! ' closes on August 4, 2001 at the end of operating hours at the Disney-MGM Studios. "Playhouse Disney-Live On Stage!" opened on October 1, 2001 with the beginning of the "100 Years of Magic Celebration".

Disney's Doug Live! - Opens
On March 15, 1999, Disney's Doug Live! stage show opens. It closes on May 12, 2001.

Disney's Toy Story Parade - Premieres
On November 22, 1995, Disney's Toy Story Parade premieres at the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD®Resort. Last performance of the Parade takes place on June 8, 1997

Disney-MGM Studios - Opens
In May 1, 1989 Disney-MGM Studios opens at the WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort with the following attractions:
* The Monster Sound Show (became ABC Sound Studio: One Saturday Morning on July 1, 1997 and closed on February 21, 1999 to be replaced by SOUNDS DANGEROUS Starring Drew Carey on April 22, 1999.)
* Super Star Television
* The Great Movie Ride
* Backstage Studio Tour (became Disney-MGM Studios Backlot Tour on June 30, 1996, updating the attraction by combining both the Special Effects Water Tank show and the Backstage Studio Tour)
* The Magic of Disney Animation
* The Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular! opened for dress rehearsals only. (Official dedication and grand opening take place on August 25, 1989 with George Lucas and Michael Eisner in attendance)

Disney-MGM Studios - Parking
Disney's Hollywood Studios™ parking facilities accommodate 7,500 vehicles and cover 77 acres.

Disney-MGM Studios Backlot Tour - Opens
On June 30, 1996, Disney-MGM Studios Backlot Tour opens replacing the Backstage Studio Tour at the Disney-MGM Studios at theWALT DISNEY WORLD®Resort. (This updated attraction combines both the Special Effects Water Tank show and the Backstage Studio Tour).  Renamed Studio Backlot Tour on January 7, 2008, when the park's name changed to Disney's Hollywood Studios.

Fantasmic! - Opens
On October 15, 1998, Fantasmic! (a new night time spectacular show replacing "Sorcery in the Sky") officially premieres.

Hercules "Zero to Hero" Victory Parade - Premieres
On June 27, 1997, the 14-minute Hercules "Zero to Hero" Victory Parade premieres.
The last performance of the Hercules "Zero to Hero" Victory Parade takes place on April 18, 1998 at the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD®Resort.

Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular! - Opening
In August 25, 1989 the official dedication and grand opening of the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular! and the EWOK Village (opens on August 24, 1989) take place at the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort, with George Lucas and Michael Eisner in attendance.

Jim Henson's Muppet*Vision 3-D - Opens
On May 16, 1991, Jim Henson's Muppet*Vision 3-D film attraction opens in the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort. NOTE: On October 1, 2004, "Jim Henson's Muppet*Vision 3D" film attraction changes its name to Muppet*Vision 3D.

Mulan Parade - Opens
On June 19, 1998, the Mulan Parade premieres at the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD®Resort. The final performance of the Mulan Parade takes place on March 11, 2001 at the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD®Resort.

Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith - Opens
On July 30, 1999, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith officially opens to Guests at the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD®Resort.
Grand opening celebrations and the dedication of Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, with the rock band Aerosmith in attendance, takes place on July 29, 1999 at the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD®Resort.

SOUNDS DANGEROUS Starring Drew Carey - Opens
On April 22, 1999, SOUNDS DANGEROUS Starring Drew Carey, opens in the ABC Sound Studio at the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD®Resort. (It replaced ABC Sound Studio: One Saturday Morning which closed on February 21, 1999).

Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant - Opens
On April 20, 1991, the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant opens in the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD®Resort.

Star Tours - Dedication
On January 13, 1990, the official dedication of the Star Tours attraction takes place at the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort. George Lucas, Mark Hammil, Carrie Fisher, and Michael Eisner were among the notables in attendance.

Star Tours - Opens
In December 15, 1989 Star Tours opens at the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort. It closed down on September8th, 2010 in preparation of the brand-new "Star Tours V.2 - The Adventures continue".

Sunset Boulevard - Opens
On June 12, 1994, Sunset Boulevard officially opens in the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort.

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror - Height
The height of The Twilight Zone Tower of TerrorTM is 199 feet.

Twilight Zone Tower of Terror - Opens
On July 22, 1994, The Twilight Zone Tower of TerrorTMopens at the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort.
* The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror second show enhancement (double drop) debuts in May, 1996.
* The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror: Fear Every Drop! (third enhancement) debuts on March 1, 1999.
* The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror officially debuts a new drop sequence on December 31, 2002 (fourth show enhancement since the attraction opened on July 22, 1994).  This entirely new drop sequence places the computers in control of the ride experience for the first time, making each ride sequence unique and random.

Twilight Zone Tower of TerrorTM: Fear Every Drop! - Debuts
On March 1, 1999, the Twilight Zone Tower of TerrorTM: Fear Every Drop! (third show enhancement) debuts at the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD®Resort.

Walt Disney Feature Animation Florida - Opens
On April 6, 1998, the new Walt Disney Feature Animation Florida building opens in the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD®Resort. Dedication ceremony of the new Walt Disney Feature Animation Florida building takes place on April 22, 1998 at the Disney-MGM Studios at the WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort.
