This Week in Disney History: Feb. 21 - 27

Feb. 23, 1939: Walt Disney receives a special Academy Award for "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs"
"And the Oscar goes to…Walt Disney for 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.' " At the 11th Academy Awards ceremony on Feb. 23, 1939, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented a special Oscar, including seven miniatures mounted on a plinth, to Walt Disney in recognition of his revolutionary animated film. The award, with the inscription, "To Walt Disney for 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' recognized as a significant screen innovation which has charmed millions and pioneered a great new entertainment field for the motion picture cartoon," was presented by nine-year-old Shirley Temple. "Isn't it bright and shiny," she asked. Walt replied with a smile, "Yes, I am so proud of it." Walt Disney still holds the record for the most Oscars wins in the history of the Academy Awards with 26 total wins.

Feb. 21, 1997: The first "Star Wars" Weekend ever debuts at Disney-MGM Studios in Florida
The force was felt across Walt Disney World when the first "Star Wars" Weekend launched into orbit at Disney-MGM Studios in 1997. The event was a celebration of the special edition movie releases of "Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back" and "Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi." During select weekends in February and March, Guests could take flight into the world of these iconic films. The event included meet-and-greets with the cosmic characters, Guest appearances by some of the movies' stars, limited-edition "Star Wars" merchandise, a street party, and a special "Sorcery in the Sky" fireworks display with a "Star Wars" twist. This event was a massive success and is now an annual event at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Check out this year's "Star Wars" Weekends May 16 through June 8.

1965 "— Mary Poppins" receives 13 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture

1998 — Official All Star Cafe opens at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex 
2006 — "The Timekeeper" CircleVision film permanently closes at Magic Kingdom Park

Feb. 27 
1996 — Walt Disney World announces it will host Atlanta Braves spring training beginning with the 1998 season 
1992 — Elizabeth Taylor holds her 60th birthday party at Disneyland Park 
1998 — Disney's Animal Kingdom passes its first inspection by the United States Department of Agriculture, officially licensing the park to exhibit animals
