Magic Kingdom: Central Hub Expansion Announced

Great news coming from the Magic Kingdom Park! It looks like the plans that were recently circulating around many Walt Disney World fan sites have just been confirmed. In fact, earlier today, Disney officially confirmed that the hub of the Magic Kingdom Park (the central plaza located at the end of Main Street U.S.A.) is in the process of receiving a major expansion that will include new trees, flowers, bridges, walkways, and themed structures! Here you are additional information regarding this great project, from the Disney Parks Blog:

Magic Kingdom Enhancements Include Special Viewing Area, New Pathways, Gardens

If you’re a regular Disney Parks Blog reader, you’re certainly familiar with one of our guests’ favorite places at Magic Kingdom Park: the Central Plaza area between the end of Main Street and Cinderella Castle. Well, we’ve just begun a project that’ll make it even better. We’re adding several new elements to the area, including sculpted gardens, additional pathways, expanded restaurant seating and even a special viewing area for fireworks and other performances.

Look closely at our fly-through video and you’ll notice that the enhancements will include new trees and more landscaping in the Central Plaza area. The sculpted gardens planned for the location are inspired by the lush grounds seen around European castles and chateaus.

To make it easier to move around, two additional pathways will be built around the plaza. Also, seating outside of Casey’s Corner and The Plaza restaurant will nearly double in size.

From Disney California Adventure to New Fantasyland, we have a long-standing track record of being able to make enhancements while maintaining the magic of the Disney experience, and we look forward to continuing that tradition with this work.

This multi-phase enhancement project has already begun and it’ll be completed in 2015.

We are personally glad to see that Disney is finally taking big steps to solve the major capacity issues that have always plagued the Magic Kingdom Park. Now it's your turn. What do you personally think about these changes?

  1. It's such a shame to lose the beautiful open vistas around the hub. The real way to improve the capacity issues at Magic Kingdom is to improve the other three parks.

  2. OMG agreed, Anonymous 1. The water ways around the castle are so beautiful, they just want to cram more people in MK. And now certain areas around central plaza will be fast pass +. so if you dont have a fast pass you cant stand there how dumb?!

  3. I think this is a great plan. As shows like Wishes, Remember Dreams Come True, and Disney Dreams incorporate the castle more and more, changes need to be made to add capacity. The only thing I think Disney could have done better here is announcing it as as a new show (possibly a clone of DLP's Disney Dreams with WoC-like fountains) and these capacity changes as a sidebar to that. Who knows? Maybe that's still in the cards.
