RFID Lock Conversion Starting Soon at Kidani Village

As you know, all Disney Resorts in Florida are undergoing major changes to upgrade the room's door locks so that they are able to use the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. The next Resort to go "under the knife" will be the Kidani Village (a section of the Animal Kingdom Lodge):

Kidani Village: RFID Door Lock Conversion Begins August 23, 2012

Beginning Thursday, August 23, new door locks will begin to be installed at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge – Kidani Village. The new door locks will be enabled with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) door access. New Key to the World cards also enabled with RFID technology will be issued to Guests using the new door locks at Kidani Village. The design on the new card differs slightly from the current card – the clouds and color look slightly different and the placement of the castle has changed.

Please note, new Key to the World cards will be issued at all of our other resorts as each resort’s door locks are converted to wireless RFID technology over the next year.

Thank you for your attention, and keep your eye out for these new "additions" during your next visit to a Disney Resort (by the way, some of the other hotels already have these new door locks)!

  1. I heard the Beach Club has these locks now. Is that true? I will be staying there in October and can't wait to try it out!

  2. I saw a permit for this back in July that is probably for this project. There were also similar permits filed today for the Polynesian and Port Orleans Riverside.

  4. Can someone explain to me what the purpose of converting door locks to RFID is? Please tell me it's about more than just going from swiping a card through a slot to waving it over the lock. It seems really expensive to do all these conversations just for that.

  5. Every time a RFID card is used, it is tracked in a computer. They'll know when and where a specific guest used their keycard, either for their hotel room door, laundry rooms, game rooms, or whatever. In addition, they'll be able to track the location of the card (guest) as the card passes by sensors placed throughout the parks, resorts and shops. Not that Disney will admit to as much to the guests if they can help it. ~__^; The sheer amount of biometric data to be collected and used is staggering and should be worth a fortune. Please research RFID chips and their uses on Google for some interesting reading.

  6. It could also be related to the NextGen Fastpass where resort guests can make a reservation in advance and just tap and go by the entrance of the attraction.
