This Week in Disney History: Aug. 20-26

Aug. 24, 1942 - The animated film "Saludos Amigos" premieres in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The sixth feature film in The Walt Disney Animated Classics series, "Saludos Amigos," follows new and favorite Disney characters on their adventures throughout South America. José Carioca (known as Zé Carioca in Brazil), a suave and exotic parrot, joins Donald Duck in the finale of the film, "Aquarela do Brasil." José introduces Donald to the beauty of Brazil and encourages him to shake a tail feather through a festive introduction to samba. Although it was not released in the United States until February 1943, the film debuted in Rio de Janeiro as a part of the Good Neighbor Policy during World War II, with Walt Disney bringing the popularity of Disney cartoons to South America. The success of the film produced a follow-up animated feature, "The Three Caballeros," which premiered in Mexico City on Dec. 21, 1944.
