PHOTOS: New Cast Member Costumes Debuting at Disney's Riviera Resort

The Walt Disney World Resort is putting the final touches on the newest Disney Vacation Club resort and every detail helps to tell this new story inspired by Europe and imagined by Disney. Just as Walt Disney Imagineering puts great care into the design of the resort’s rooms and restaurants to transport Guests to the Mediterranean Riviera, their Costuming partners capture the colors, patterns, and atmosphere and translate it into Cast Member costumes.

For Costume Designers Josh Winchester and Christine Burchett Butler, this meant diving deep into an ocean of research that explored the geography, landscapes, and hues of the iconic Riviera. This research inspired the shades of blue seen throughout the costume collection, some reflecting the bright blue skies, others the stunning sapphire sea and even the umbrellas seen along the shoreline.

When selecting key colors, the team explained that it was just important to think about what our eyes think an ocean blue looks like. Those blues play out beautifully on a Coco Channel-inspired jacket that’s part of a mix-and-match collection for Front Desk and Merchandise Cast.

Disney’s Riviera Resort features an outstanding collection of artwork that helped inform the costume designs, but the artists themselves also inspired the overall look and feel of the costumes. Josh and Christine looked at how Walt Disney, Pablo Picasso, Coco Channel, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant and more dressed while vacationing in the Riviera.

“We looked at Old Hollywood stars and films, and we both immediately gravitated toward ‘To Catch a Thief,” Christine reminisced. The elegance of Grace Kelly’s signature style is portrayed with clean and classic silhouettes in the skirts and dresses, as well as a wide-brimmed white hat for the Resort Greeters. Cary Grant’s casual sweaters and tailored suits inspired key pieces for Valet, Front Desk and Merchandise Cast.

These looks are completed with a number of fantastic accessories, including a vegan leather rosette broach. “We thought about accessories that were straightforward, like scarves, neckties and hats, and created them in a way that can be customized by each Cast Member,” said Josh.

Many Cast at the resort will enjoy the flexibility and versatility of a mix-and-match collection. This allows Cast to add their personalize touch to their looks.

Disney’s Riviera Resort officially opens on December 16. Be sure to stop by to check it out during your next visit!
