This Week in Disney History: September 23-29, 2019

On Sept. 23, 1980, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad proved itself as the wildest ride in the wilderness at Magic Kingdom Park in Walt Disney World Resort. On board this roller coaster, Guests embark on a harrowing journey through dark caverns and deep sandstone gorges, encountering swarming bats, crashing landslides, and rumbling earthquakes along the way.

1980 – Big Thunder Mountain Railroad opens at Magic Kingdom Park

1985 – The Lotus Blossom Cafe opens in the China pavilion at Epcot

Sept. 25
2014 – “How to Get Away with Murder” one-hour drama series premieres on ABC

Sept. 26
1991 – Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano restaurant opened at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Sept. 27
2008 – The first runDisney Expedition Everest Challenge is held at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park

Sept. 28
2001 – The expanded Emporium opens at the Magic Kingdom Park, putting the entire west side of Main Street, U.S.A. under one roof

Sept. 29
2017 – BaseLine Tap House at Disney’s Hollywood Studios celebrates its grand opening.
