This Week in Disney History: August 6-12

This week:
On Aug. 6, 1961, Guests began to fly into the future with Walt Disney’s latest attraction, the Flying Saucers. Bringing life to a relatively quiet Tomorrowland, the Flying Saucers were the bumper cars of the future—the saucers hovered above the ground thanks to bursts of air shooting through the attraction’s floor. While this attraction floated away in 1966, more than 5 million Guests took flight on the attraction.

Aug. 6
1961 –  Flying Saucers opens at Disneyland Park
1996 –  Rainforest Cafe officially opens at the Downtown Disney Marketplace, now Disney Springs
1999 –  Hollywood Pictures and Spyglass Entertainment release “The Sixth Sense”
2003 –  Walt Disney Pictures releases a remake of “Freaky Friday”

Aug. 7
1992 –  Touchstone Pictures releases “3 Ninjas”
2004 –  The world premiere of Walt Disney Pictures’ “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement” is held at AMC Downtown Disney 12 at the Disneyland Resort

Aug. 8
1952 –  The special cartoon “The Little House” debuts
2001 – “The Wayne Brady Show” debuts on ABC
2014 – Touchstone Pictures releases “The Hundred-Foot Journey”

Aug. 9
1940 – “Donald’s Vacation” (Donald Duck cartoon short) debuts
1946 – “Wet Paint” (Donald Duck cartoon short) debuts
1969 –  The Haunted Mansion opens at Disneyland Park
1996 – Hollywood Pictures releases the film “Jack”
2004 –  Donald Duck receives a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
2013 – Disneytoon Studios releases the film “Planes”

Aug. 10
1960 – “Jungle Cat,” the final installment of the True-Life Adventures series, debuts
1994 –   Concourse Steak House opens at Disney’s Contemporary Resort
2011 –  Touchstone Pictures releases “The Help”

Aug. 11 
1934 – “Orphans’ Benefit” (Mickey Mouse cartoon short) debuts, featuring Donald Duck and Goofy together for the first time
1939 – “Donald’s Penguin,” a Donald Duck cartoon, was released
1955 –  The Casa de Fritos restaurant opens at Disneyland Park
1995 –  Hollywood Pictures releases “Dangerous Minds”
1995 – Walt Disney Picture “A Kid in King Arthur’s Court” was released in association with Tapestry Films and Trimark Pictures
1997 – The film “Air Bud” was released
2004 – “The Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement” was released
2006 – Touchstone Pictures and Summit Entertainment release the film “Step Up”

Aug. 12
1965 –  Disneyland Park welcomes its 50 millionth Guest
1967 –  Flight to the Moon opens at Disneyland Park
2000 –  The Disney Magic begins regular seven-day cruise itineraries
2012 –  Princess Fantasy Faire closes at Disneyland Park
2016 – “Pete’s Dragon” was released, based on a reimagining of the 1977 Disney film
