This Week in Disney History: June 25 – July 1

Published every week, this interesting series features highlights from all the divisions of The Walt Disney Company. Let's see what happened this week:


This week: 
On June 28, 1988, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa opened to Guests at Walt Disney World Resort with more than 800 rooms, and a five-story lobby adorned with stained-glass domes, shimmering chandeliers and live music from a grand piano or orchestra. The hotel is also home to one of the most exclusive of the Walt Disney World dining rooms, Victoria and Albert’s. The 27,037 square foot convention center opened in 1992, and the resort received its current name in 1997, when the name was changed from the original Grand Floridian Beach Resort. The Villas at Grand Floridian Resort and Spa opened on October 23, 2013.

1967 – “America the Beautiful” (Circle-Vision 360 film) opens at Disneyland Park

June 26
1957 – The Viewliner train opens at Disneyland Park
1959 – Walt Disney Productions releases “Darby O’Gill and the Little People” and “Donald in Mathmagic Land”
1989 – Delta Dreamflight officially opens at Magic Kingdom Park
2006 – Pirates of the Caribbean officially re-opens at Disneyland Park with Captain Jack Sparrow and Barbossa Audio-Animatronics® figures added to the attraction

June 27
1986 – Big Thunder Ranch opens at Disneyland Park
1997 – Walt Disney Pictures releases “Hercules”
2008 – Disney·Pixar releases “WALL·E”

June 28
1988 – Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa opens
1995 – Main Street Athletic Club opens at Magic Kingdom Park
2003 – Disneyland Park hosts the world premiere of “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl”

June 29
1974 – America Sings opens at Disneyland Park
1996 – Mickey’s Toontown Fair opens at Magic Kingdom Park
2007 – Disney·Pixar releases “Ratatouille”

June 30
1950 – “Motor Mania” (Goofy cartoon short) debuts
1976 – The Kingdom Queen ferryboat joins the Walt Disney World Resort fleet

July 1
1933 – The animated short “Mickey’s Gala Premiere” debuts
1966 – Primeval World Diorama opens at Disneyland Park
1975 – WEDway PeopleMover, known today as the Tomorrowland Transit Authority People Mover, opens at Magic Kingdom Park
1994 – Innoventions opens at Epcot at the Walt Disney World Resort
1994 – “The Lion King Celebration” parade debuts at Disneyland Park
1996 – Disney’s BoardWalk opens at Walt Disney World Resort
1998 – Touchstone Pictures releases “Armageddon”
1998 – The Disney Magic cruise ship departs from Venice, Italy, bound for America
2011 – Goofy’s Sky School (formerly Mulholland Madness) opens at Disney California Adventure Park
2016 – Disney Springs Grand Opening Summer Celebration kicks off at the Walt Disney World Resort
