This Week in Disney History: May 28-June 3

This week: The date was May 31, 2008. The mission had been accepted. In conjunction with the opening of Toy Story Mania! at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Buzz Lightyear blasted off into space along with the eight-member crew of the Space Shuttle Discovery mission STS-124 to the International Space Station. The “Toy Story” Star Command Space Ranger orbited the Earth for 467 days (15 months) – and set a space duration record –  as part of the Disney Parks-NASA Space Ranger Education Series, an educational program aimed to inspire children about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).

1966 – “it’s a small world” opens at Disneyland Park
1994 – Disney’s Wilderness Lodge opens at the Walt Disney World Resort
2010 – Walt Disney Studios release “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time”
2014 – Seven Dwarfs Mine Train opens at Magic Kingdom Park

May 29
1937 – “Modern Inventions” Mickey Mouse cartoon is released
1986 – Spaceship Earth reopens at Epcot featuring a new narration by Walter Cronkite
1991 – Tokyo Disneyland welcomes its 100 millionth Guest
1992 – Touchstone Pictures releases “Sister Act”
2009 – Disney•Pixar releases “Up”
2011 – A new pool area featuring Monorail-themed water slides opens at the Disneyland Hotel

May 30
1936 – “Thru the Mirror” (Mickey Mouse cartoon short) debuts
1941 – “Canine Caddy” (Pluto cartoon) debuts
1947 – “Figaro and Frankie” (Figaro cartoon) debuts
1953 – “Don’s Fountain of Youth” (Donald Duck cartoon short) debuts
1967 – Groundbreaking is held for the construction of the Walt Disney World Resort
2003 – Disney•Pixar releases “Finding Nemo”
2014 – Walt Disney Studios release “Maleficent”

May 31
1991 – “101 Dalmatians: A Counting Book” is the first book published by Disney Press.
2008 – A Buzz Lightyear action figure joins the crew of space shuttle Discovery mission STS-124, blasting off to the International Space Station
2008 – Pixar Place opens at Disney’s Hollywood Studios with Toy Story Midway Mania!, Hey Howdy Hey Take Away, and the Toy Story Dept. shop.
2012 – Disney’s Art of Animation Resort officially opens at the Walt Disney World Resort
2013 – A Pirate’s Adventure: Treasures of the Seven Seas experience opens at Magic Kingdom Park

June 1
1982 – A new Monorail line from the Transportation and Ticket Center to Epcot is unveiled
1989 – Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park opens at the Walt Disney World Resort
1995 – Space Mountain: From the Earth to the Moon opens at Disneyland Paris
2002 – Journey Into Your Imagination changes to Journey Into Imagination with Figment
2009 – Remodeled Treehouse Villas open at Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa
2010 – Cinderella’s Golden Carrousel in Magic Kingdom Park renamed Prince Charming Regal Carrousel

June 2
1944 – “Commando Duck” (Donald Duck cartoon) debuts
1989 – Touchstone Pictures releases “Dead Poets Society”

June 3
1949 – “Winter Storage” (Donald Duck) short debuts |
1994 – Touchstone Pictures releases “Renaissance Man”
2011 – Star Tours – The Adventures Continue opens at Disneyland Park
2011 – Wally Boag, Disney Legend and “Golden Horseshoe Revue” star at Disneyland Park, dies at age 90
