Courtesy Wheelchairs No Longer Available at Disney Hotels

To further align resort and park processes, as well as match industry standards, courtesy Guest wheelchairs will no longer be available at Walt Disney World Resort hotels starting from next month (at the moment, the rumored date for the implementation of this change is Tuesday, September 8, 2015).
That said, Guests staying at any of the Disney hotels can still rent wheelchair equipment from featured vendors, which will be available for a nominal fee.

  1. Does this include ECVs, or just regular wheelchairs?

  3. This change is simply that resort won't offer free wheelchairs anymore. If someone needs one, they need to rent it. All the other words in the announcement is just marketing fluff so it doesn't just look like charging for something that used to be free.

  5. Yay! Maybe this will cutdown some of the over abundance of wheelchairs at WDW. Seriously...the last time we were there it was like wheelchair apocalypse...constantly getting squeezed between 2 chairs...dodging for our lives. I'm talking of course about the people who don't really need it...the people walking most of the way and then using it when they're tired.

  6. I Iive in Orlando. When my 92 year old mother visited, I took her to the Boardwalk hotel, used the valet parking, and then used a resort wheelchair to take her to dinner at the ESPN Club.
Will wheelchairs still be available for the locals (like the example above)?

  7. I find this change a little sad. They're not talking about the ECVs, it's wheel chairs. Most of the time the people using them are the ones who have gotten to Disney and then had something happen there such as a twisted ankle. Other times it's the elderly who think they can make it around the park only to realize how difficult it is.

Unless you're a pair of 8 year olds, no one wants to push someone around a theme park.

  8. Doesn't matter if your local or not. No FREE wheelchairs at the hotels. At the parks there has been a fee for as long as I can remember.

If they need one at the Park, they have always needed to rent. I don't know of other hotels that have wheelchairs for guest. If you need one you, hopefully they will be available to rent at the hotel

  10. This is just about the beat up wheelchairs that resorts used to keep to lend to guests staying there. You can still rent from an outside vendor, either a wheelchair or scooter. You can still rent from Disney in the parks (so sorry, it isn't likely to cut down on people who need them using them). I assume, like most large hotels, they will have one for emergencies like person falling and needing transport back to their room, but if you need one beyond that you will now have to rent one. I strongly suggest renting ECVs rather than chairs as WDW is in no way flat (believe me, I know). The rates from an outside vendor are much less than renting by the day at the parks and you then will have it with you at your resort.
