SeaWorld Team Members Making a Difference Today

SeaWorld Team Members work to make every day Earth Day! As you may know, guests wouldn't normally find plastic bags in our parks as we recently transitioned to paper and recycled bags only, which has saved an estimated 4 million bags from entering landfills each year! In honor of Earth Day this year, SeaWorld Orlando Team Members have started bringing in plastic grocery and shopping bags from home. Once collected, the bags will be recycled into wildlife-friendly, reusable bags.

Later this month, the plastic bags will be sent to Proyecto Tití, one of the many conservation organizations that receives funding from the SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund, who will recycle these plastic bags into reusable bags call eco-mochilas. These bags are an environmentally-friendly twist on the traditional Colombian mochila, a hand-woven bag usually adorned with indigenous art. Local artisans will use the recycled plastic bags to create reusable bags in all shapes and sizes!

Here are a few helpful tips to make our environment safer for the animals who live in it:
  • Don’t trash where you splash. Animals often mistake common items, such as plastic bags, as food and will try to eat them, which can cause illness, or even death.
  • Recycle, reduceand reuse. Recycling half of your glass, aluminum, plastic, newspaper and cardboard prevents about 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide - a greenhouse gas - from entering the atmosphere each year.
  • Treat water like gold. All animals, including humans, need water to survive. Did you know that you could save over 1,000 gallons of water each year just by taking a five minute shower? Not only do you help save our planet, but it will help you save money!
