This Week in Disney History: March 28 - April 3

April 2, 1954 — Walt Disney announces plans for Disneyland Park and the "Disneyland" television show
It was the moment the magic was revealed. On April 2, 1954, ABC and Disney boards approved the ownership and financing deal for Disneyland, which meant Walt Disney's dream was now possible. With $9,000,000 and 160 acres of historic ranch land in Orange County, Calif., Walt Disney was ready to begin construction for what the local papers referred to as “Disney's Wonderland.” Disneyland was described as a “combination world fair, playground, community center and a museum of yesterday, tomorrow and fantasy.” The original plans divided the park into five areas: True Life Adventure Land, Frontier Land, Fantasy Land, Recreation Land and Holiday Land. These plans were revealed during an hour-long weekly segment on ABC titled "Disneyland." This show made history as the first television production by a major Hollywood studio, and with thirty-four seasons, as the longest-running primetime network series of its kind. The show eventually moved to NBC and was named “The Wonderful World of Disney.”

April 2, 2007 — Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor opens at Magic Kingdom Park in Walt Disney World
“Hello Humans!” The Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor attraction opened at Magic Kingdom Park in Walt Disney World to a theater full of laughs and giggles. Located in Tomorrowland, this interactive theater show replaced the Timekeeper attraction, which opened in 1992 and was voiced by Robin Williams. Before this monstrous attraction opened in April 2007, it was called The Laugh Floor Comedy Club, but its current name seemed a better fit for the not-so-scary monster comedy show. The main theater is equipped with 400 seats and uses digital puppetry and computer-rendered monsters to interact with guests. No two shows are exactly alike, as live actors work in front of a green screen to create a unique experience for each audience. As Guests watch the screen, the ‘Monster of Ceremonies’ Mike Wazowski keeps the crowd laughing with help from his fellow Monster comedians. Mike must fill the laugh can to power Monstropolis, but will human laughter be enough to fill it?
