This Week in Disney History: January 17 - 23


Jan. 19, 1997 - The first NASCAR Craftsman Truck series race takes place at the Walt Disney World Speedway.
The Chevy Trucks Challenge, part of the Craftsman Truck series, took place for the first time at the Walt Disney World Speedway on this day, giving Guests a new reason to the visit the Resort. Craftsman teams and members of the NASCAR family gathered from all around the country to enjoy this inaugural event, which showcased racing of all varieties including off-road, open-wheel, motorcross and drag. The series debuted in 1995, offering 20 stops and a 1.6 million dollar prize winning and has since undergone numerous expansions and a name change over the years.  Today it is known as the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, after Camping World replaced Craftsman and became the title sponsor in 2009.


Jan. 23, 2006 - Monsters, Inc. Mike and Sulley to the Rescue! Opens at Disney California Adventure Park.
Debuting in 2006, the Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! attraction at Disney California Adventure Park is another great example of how Disney Parks transforms scenes and characters from beloved films into three-dimensional worlds and experiences that can be enjoyed by Guests of all ages. This fun-filled attraction invites Guests to maneuver their way through the streets of Monstropolis via a taxi as they follow the film’s two main characters, Mike and Sulley, on their mission of safely returning “Boo” to her bedroom. The attraction features over 40 characters in 16 distinct scenes with newly recorded performances by many of the film’s original voice talents including Billy Crystal and John Goodman. This array of innovative new adventures debuted as a part of Disneyland Resort’s 50th anniversary celebration.

1933 - “The Mad Doctor” (Mickey Mouse cartoon short) debuts
1955 - Wrather-Alvarez Hotels, Inc. announces the construction of the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, Calif.
1960 - “Gala Day at Disneyland” (documentary featurette) debuts
1977 - Walt Disney Pictures releases “Freaky Friday”
1995 - “Circle of Life: An Environmental Fable" debuts at The Land at Epcot
1998 - Disney acquires the Wrather Corporation, owners of the Disneyland Hotel
1998 - The original Disneyland parking lot closes
2011 - The Disney Wonder arrives at the Port of Los Angeles, beginning a 2-year stay on the west coast

Jan. 22
1964 - Walt Disney Pictures releases “The Misadventures of Merlin Jones”
2001 - “The Book of Pooh” (television series) debuts on Disney Channel

Jan. 23
1948 - “They’re Off” (Goofy cartoon short) debuts
1987 - The Mark V trains debut on the Disneyland Monorail System
1999 - Cirque du Soleil opens in Downtown Disney at the Walt Disney World Resort
2006 - Monsters Inc.: Mike and Sulley to the Rescue! opens at Disney California Adventure Park
