This Week in Disney History: June 29-July 5

July 1, 1994 – Innoventions opens at Epcot
Located at the heart of Future World, Innonventions is devoted to new technology and science that could change the way we live. A mash-up of the words “innovate” and “invention,” Innoventions expands upon the theme of Communicore, the original pavilion tenant, which introduced Guests to the world of computers. Built for constant refreshment, the exhibits of Innoventions can be switched out to reflect the latest and greatest ideas and products. Spread across two circular buildings to the east and west, the interactive showcases include enlightening experiences like “The Great Piggy Bank Adventure,” devoted to personal finance, and exhilarating simulations including “Sum of All Thrills,” where Guests create and experience their own virtual thrill ride. In 1997, Innoventions opened at Disneyland Park in the former home of another beloved look at the future, the Carousel of Progress.

June 29, 2007 – Disney•Pixar releases “Ratatouille”
Remy dreams of becoming a great chef. The problem is, he’s a rat, and his family’s garbage-digging ways aren’t simpatico with fine dining. When Remy gets swept through a storm drain into Paris, directly underneath the legendary restaurant of chef Auguste Gusteau, he drops into the kitchen as a most unwanted guest. The new plongeur Linguini captures Remy, but not before catching a glimpse of his culinary talent. After discovering a puppet-like control mechanism in Linguini’s hair, the two team up to put Gusteau’s back on the map. Although Linguini gets accolades thanks to his “little chef,” France’s toughest food critic and a tipped-off health inspector could give the restaurant the wrong kind of attention. “Ratatouille” earned director Brad Bird his second Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, following his 2004 win with “The Incredibles.” Remy is voiced by comedian Patton Oswalt, who was cast by Bird after hearing his standup routines on food.
