Rumor Hints to Extensive Use of RFID Technology

Screamscape has posted a very interesting rumor this morning. According to it, all Walt Disney World resort guests who will stay on property may soon not need the "Key to the World" card anymore. To enter the park, buy in the shops, use the Photopass and Fastpass systems they would just need to wear... a band. Read more:

General [Walt Disney World] Resort News - (8/17/11) A very interesting news story involving some NextGen Disney Tech that we might expect to see announced as early as this weekend can be found at DizFanatic today. According to the article, Disney is testing some new and very colorful RFID encoded wristbands that they are hoping to have guests begin wearing in the parks.
You can pick the color of your plain band, or even spend a little extra to buy a band with your favorite characters on them, but it’s what inside that counts. The RFID bands are thought to serve not only as your theme park ticket, but will be used with the FastPass system, an upgraded PhotoPass system, possibly with new interactive games in the parks as well as trigger some special and very personal reactions from various technology set up in the parks throughout the day. (Like… how would you like to have Davy Jones call you out by name the next ride you ride through Pirates? Talk about spooky…)

Sounds very interesting, doesn't it? To me, this doesn't seem like a very difficult thing to implement in the parks, and it would be nice to just use your band to enter through the turnstiles, instead of using the typical ticket. Would this speed up the entry process or the check out at the resort's shops and restaurants? Maybe.
What do you think? (Thanks again to Screamscape for sharing with us such interesting rumors).

  1. Big Brother will be following all your moves in Disneyland.. The order of rides, the consumption of food, the preference of shows..

If you ask me, marketing at the next level. But also bye bye privacy!

The question is where will Disney stop in getting you to spend money?

  2. You have no privacy anyway lol If they really wanted to track you they could correlate the use of your park ticket, credit cards etc. Sure, it will be a fuller picture, but it's not like they're going to be tracking you on CCTV (yet...!)

I'm not bothered if they know how many times I've ridden Splash Mountain or how many cinnamon rolls I've purchased, more than likely those statistics will be used to improve my experience going forward. So I'm happy :)

  3. This past July my family and I stayed at The Great Wolf Lodge in Niagra Falls, Ontario and they used a wrist band system not only as your entry pass to the water park but also as your room key. Trust me it was by far the best system for a hatel key system I have ever experienced, no always checking to see if someone had a key before closing the door when you went out. Best idea yet.
