Disney Monorail to Stop Operating During EMH

Another very bad news was revealed just yesterday afternoon. The Monorail service from and to Epcot, as well as the monorail service from and to the Magic Kingdom will not be available for guests staying in the parks during the Extra Magic Hour (EMH) evenings. Read More:

Monorail Operating Hours Change

From time to time, we make adjustments to our operations to accommodate for planned transportation maintenance. With that in mind, operating hours for the Epcot Monorail system will be modified to operate one hour after regular park close beginning July 11, 2011 and the Magic Kingdom Monorail system will also operate one hour after regular park close beginning August 1, 2011. At that time, watercraft (where applicable) and additional buses will be available to transport guests to their destination.
Return service from evening Extra Magic Hours in the parks will be supported by watercraft (where applicable) and bus transportation.

We have no words for this. First, they take away the meet-and-greets for guests staying during the Extra Magic Hours. Then, they do this. What will be next? Taking away the Extra magic Hours altogether? That'd be the most logic result. Always cutting, cutting, cutting. And who is affected in all this? Not us locals, but people who save money during their entire life to come to a Disney resort and to be able to experience the parks before (or after) the general public. Oh, well...

  1. Surprised they haven't announced that the rides would not be operating during EMH, since they only said that the parks would be open for EMH. OOPS - I hope I haven't given them any ideas! ; )

  2. Wow... maybe one day they will announce that all the light in the park will be off!!! They are crazy!! I can't understand why!!!

They complain that some people frustrated by a day in the park, will cause some crazy attack to the bus driver because the buss will be full and how they think it will be when they will reduce the number of connection disabling the Monorail????

this is a problem of security.... I just hope the will not regulate the EMH like the Disney Land Paris: 1 hour in just one park in the morning from 8 to 10 with half of the attraction open!!!!

  3. Ok. Here's my opinion. Do you all realize that there are major refurbishments and additions being made to the park? There's definitely going to be changes to make these go more smoothly. I just think that extra magic hours, even though they are a benefit, can be adjusted due to all of this construction. Everyone needs to chill out!

  4. Emily-
Your comment doesn't even make sense, but I love the the apologist spin! What does the FLE have to with ceasing the monorail to the resorts during EMH? Nothing. Did you read the article?

Some of us are rightfully worried that this is a slippery slope to WDW stopping EMH altogther because they will say EMH was poorly attended.

  5. Again -

As it appeared that OTPN was pretty pumped about Meg Crofton getting promoted to the new US / France Parks President, I, like so many others, especially on the West Coast are pretty worried about her management style.
And, less than a week later, we get this type of good news (kidding). I am serious, this is a slippery slope and unless there is some serious letters, e-mails, phone calls, WDW is going to become a huge Theme ParK Destination without a real heart and soul for the guests who spend literally thousands of dollars to attempt a "magical" vacation. This, like I said before, is yet another indication to me that the almighty bottom dollar, even despite the "direct" circumstances of the guests is more important, despite the huge anticipated grumblings that will follow. Shame Meg Crofton....Shame.....

  6. Ever stop to think about the workload being placed on the trains right now? With park closings at 1 am, the monorails are running until 2:30. About 90 minutes later, the trains are taken back to shop. At 4:00, the trains are with maintenance, and by 5:00 the openers are moving the trains onto the beams. There is literally one hour on many nights to inspect and repair these 20 year old vehicles.

Lately there has been a significant amount of downtime and with only 11 trains able to run (Coral is offline making it 10 right now) there is no real possibility to take one train off at a time to perform routine maintenance.

Maybe the answer is to do away with EMH at night? How would that suit you? Disneyland only does Magic Mornings, maybe we should go back to that. Then you'd have something new to complain about.

While I'm not a supporter of Meg as a local Exec, let alone a division Exec, I can tell you that this has been in the works for months.

And while you're all fired up, lets start lighting the torches now that WDW F&B is using RFID tags on resort mugs to prevent people from using mugs from decades ago, cups from McDonald's or cooler sized containers. How dare they control costs!!!

  7. You can complain about the all mighty dollar, but the all mighty dollar is all mighty. Your dollars are no more important than there's. They answer to the stock market... FACT. They have legal obligation to continue to grow their value to the investors FACT.

I don't like it anymore that anyone else but in the end this makes almost no difference. There are plenty of buses and plenty of boats to carry the limited crowds. The magic world we wish was Disney exists in the real world. Even though we wish that it did not.

  8. I'm not so sure that this will have a positive effect on that bottom line. A major draw of staying on property is the advantage of Extra Magic Hours. A major draw of the deluxe resorts on the monorail line is the convenience of the easy, direct monorail transport to the front step of your resort, especially after a long day. This could hurt attendance at those resorts and anger guests who don't know about this change.

  9. ^If I were a guest staying at the Grand Floridian, and I was at the park until 2 hours after the park closed for EMH, I'd be more than happy to take a short boat ride back to my resort rather than being on the monorail for 4 stops.

So while I can appreciate the idea and prestige of a monorail resort, sometimes it's just not the fastest.

  10. Yes these trains are not in the best of shape but then carrying 45000 people 20 hours a day doesn't help much.

Perhaps the answer is for Disney to purchase 4 more trains. Then they could take 4 of the 1991 Mark 6's out of service for rehap/refurb.

Once rehabed, despite the cost, build the new Hollywood AK line and an additional 6 trains. It's time folks! Lets do it!
