Captain EO review

Finally, after more than 24 years, Captain EO has returned!!
We checked it out yesterday, on the supposedly "annual passholders exclusive preview" (I say supposed because in reality it was open to the general public, which was even better, because it allowed me to see it 4 times in a row!), and here's OTPN's OFFICIAL REPORT:

Captain EO is a classic. It was like going back in time, during the golden era of Epcot, were Horizon, World of Motion, Wonders of Life, Odyssey and The Living seas were still standing.
Well, now even the new generation can experience a bit of Epcot's history.

Talking about the new version of Captain EO, you can spot it from the entrance of the Imagination pavilion, where a cart stands, selling t-shirts, caps, gadgets and more, all rigorously Captain EO-related:

Near the entrance of the theater, there is a poster of the 3D film, along with an "annual passholders only" sign, to keep most of the crowds away:

The entrance to the theater now features the logo of Captain EO, with a new "Caution" sign:

Going inside the theater, you immediately notice that the carpet has been completely changed, with all the Imagination Institute logos gone. There are also phrases from the film and more logos and pictures, that you can just see for a brief amount of time, since you'll have to enter the pre-show room almost immediately:

The pre-show room features again the logo of the film (it's everywhere, but that's ok, it's great):

You wait for just 6 minutes, and then the prelude to the film begins. It's absolutely not even near the length of the previous Kodak pre-show, since it lasts exactly 5 minutes. It features some scenes of the "making of" the film. Even if the female announcer didn't tell you, you would have noticed by yourself that it is the original prelude of the show from 1986 (wow, that's 24 years ago!!).

Here's the prelude (recorded by the OTPN staff, but copyright of the Walt Disney Company):

Inside the theater, the changes are subtle but effective:

The small screen on the left of the big screen is gone, the carpet is new and the prelude music is great!!
It gives the theater a mysterious look...

ABOUT THE MOVIE: Captain EO is shorter than "Honey, I shrunk the audience", indeed it only lasts 18 minutes ("Honey, I shrunk the audience" lasted 25 minutes or so). Since I don't want to post spoilers, in case you didn't see it before, I will just say that I liked it a lot, the music is GREAT, the characters are very funny, the story is very simple to understand and the special effects are more used than in the previous movie.
The only problem: since it is a very old movie, the 3D effects are not so convincing, even though the movie has received a great visual improvement.

To conclude: it is an enjoyable movie, but the best parts are the musics themselves!! They're great!
I'm so happy that Captain EO has returned, to entertain another generation... for at least an year.
After that, the Walt Disney Company has announced that they will put once again the overly-used "Honey, I shrunk the audience". Want my opinion? Forget it. Put a new film and do a rehab of the Imagination pavilion!

P.S.- A complete Epcot update is coming up!

  1. Can you clarify this any? It's hard to figure out what you're saying.

  2. Sorry, maybe I didn't express me in a right way. it means: "The pre-show you see now it's shorter than the previous one. This one is 5 minutes long, the PREVIOUS ONE was 15 minutes long".

    Hope it helps! ;-)

  3. One would think that THIS TIME, after the great attraction may close, they would produce it in DVD format for the home, for those of us who already have 3D capabilites in our home, there would be a NTSC 3D version for DVD with AC3 Audio.

I cannot wait to see this again, hopefully I can bring my family, and friends.

If the econoy really improves, maybe Captain EO could have a permanent home, and a huge upgrade, DIGITAL FILM REMASTER AUDIO, RE EQ, NEW EQUIPMENT, and cooler theater. If not, then HURRY UP AND GO SEE IT NOW!!!
